77About Nobel Prize
Nobel Prize is an international award established by Alfred Nobel in 1901. As per the will of Nobel, the award is administered by Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden. Initially the Nobel Prize was given in five areas – physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace.
Later from 1968, an additional category in Economics was added in memory of Alfred Nobel. This prize is named as Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences as it was established by Sveriges Riksbank. Nobel Prize is given in the six areas mentioned above every year.
The Prizes can be awarded to both individuals and organizations. If more than one is selected for an award, then the prize is shared among them. Till last year a total of 543 Nobel Awards were given (including Economics).

What does the Nobel Prize consist of?
Each Nobel prize consists of a medal, personal diploma and a cash award.
As per the will of Nobel, Nobel’s assets were converted into a fund and invested into safe securities. A percentage of income from that fund was being used for cash award. The amount of cash prize for the year 2011 Nobel Prize would be Swedish Kronor (SEK) 10 million per full award or USD 1.4 million.

Who was Alfred Nobel?
Alfred Nobel was a scientist and businessman from Sweden. He invented dynamite in 1866 and in the dynamite business, he became very successful. He became the wealthiest man in those days. He died in 1896, by that time, he had 355 patents to his credit. In his will, he expressed his last wish to make a fund out of his wealth and use the income from it to award those who have done the best for humanity in the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace. His wish was fulfilled after four years when the first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901.
Despite of a few controversies, Nobel Prize is the most prestigious global award which continues to actively promote individual and organizational excellence and world harmony.

Details of Nobel Prizes 2011
This years Award in Physiology or Medicine is in the area of immunity. We have our natural immune system to protect ourselves from diseases. However some times the immune system also mistakes good foods for bad and causes allergies. This year's award winning research brought out new findings in this area. 2011 Award in Physics was given to two teams who have worked on the expansion of the universe. They studied supernovae or exploding stars and found that the universe is fast expanding than we thought earlier. Nobel Prize in Literature and Peace 2011
